FAQ
6. Frequently Asked (and Answered!) Questions
Q: Can I use a multimeter to check the voltage of a wall outlet?
A: Absolutely! Set your multimeter to AC voltage (VAC), insert the probes into the outlet slots, and read the voltage. You should see around 120 volts in North America.
Q: What does it mean if my multimeter reads zero volts when I'm expecting 120 volts?
A: It could mean the circuit breaker is tripped, there's a loose wire, or there's no power to the outlet. Double-check the breaker and wiring, and call an electrician if needed.
Q: Is it safe to work on electrical circuits if I'm not an electrician?
A: Simple tasks like replacing a light bulb or resetting a breaker are generally safe if you follow basic safety precautions. However, more complex work should be left to qualified electricians. Your safety is the priority.
Q: My multimeter has different voltage settings. Which one should I use?
A: Select the AC voltage (VAC) range that is higher than the voltage you expect to measure. For example, if you're measuring a 120V outlet, select a range of 200V or higher, if available on your multimeter. This will protect your meter from overload.
