Step-by-Step Wiring Guide (With a Grain of Salt!)
3. Proceed with Caution and Consult a Professional
Okay, let's talk about wiring, but with a HUGE disclaimer: electricity is dangerous, and if you're not comfortable working with it, please, please, PLEASE call a professional electrician. We're not responsible if you turn your house into a disco ball gone wrong.
First, turn off the power at the breaker! Seriously, double-check. Triple-check. Use a voltage tester to confirm that the circuit is dead. Then, identify the wires. Typically, you'll have black (hot), white (neutral), and green or bare copper (ground) wires. On three-way switches, you'll also have the traveler wires.
Connect the power source (black wire) to the common terminal on one three-way switch. Connect the light fixture (black wire) to the common terminal on the other three-way switch. Run the two traveler wires between the remaining terminals on both switches. Connect the neutral wires (white) together and the ground wires (green or bare copper) to the grounding screws on the switches and the electrical box.
Once everything is connected, carefully tuck the wires back into the electrical box and secure the switches. Turn the power back on at the breaker and test the switches. If the light doesn't work as expected, double-check your wiring. If you're still having trouble, call an electrician!
